The Document Everyone In Digital Marketing Needs To Understand

On 16 May Business Buzzfeed published what may be the most important piece of online content that you need to read (or at least understand) this year.

The New York Times Jill Abramson recently removed from his position as executive editor, allegedly caused an internal actor to release the remarkable document in question to the competitor Time Buzzfeed.

The internal 96-page report, titled simply "innovation" was commissioned by President Arthur Sulzberger Jr. to ask the tough questions about the place of publication among its peers in the transition from

"A newspaper also produces a digital report to a rich and impressive digital publication that also produces a rich and impressive newspaper"

It is very rare for a document with this level of openness to get to the hard light of computer screens to the general public.

So what's all the fuss?

Well, times have been six months, a lot of money and time Newsroom Innovation Team (including the son of Sulzberger Jr) in compiling a report documenting almost all of the problems the world is having with the transition line online publishing / marketing / room.

Mashable reports that a spokesman for the Times described the document as follows:

"This is a frank assessment of our digital transformation with interesting recommendations, many of which we have embraced and are working to implement."

Ideas make us feel much better. If the NYT is struggling with the same things to us that we are not all digital dunces we feel. The analysis of these problems and the subsequent recommendations are almost as valuable as ... well are invaluable. This vision is unique.

Anyone who is involved in online marketing or publication can and will learn something from this report in the New York Times. So grab your reading glasses, here's the truth ...

Fast Company offers a quick introduction to the event, so to speed with the context surrounding the leak to help you understand why this is such an important deal.

Co-founder of the digital agency Atlanta Simple Tiger Sean Smith speculates that the filtered Times report "may actually be one of the key documents in this age of digital media"

DigiDay have compiled a version of speed reading. They-read-the-full-report-as-you-don't-have-that is the atmosphere. If you are more visually inclined, these 5 graphics have a quick and compelling story

Harvard Neiman Journalism Lab commentator give a sharp analysis of the highlights of the report. If you are looking for a truncated with a little more substance that tells why this version is so important, hop on over to a place of Joshua Benton.

For the most part, the Times report was publicly praised as a frank, honest and accurate assessment. The review of the findings has been few and far between. Kind-of-Vox is a competitor of publishers mentioned in the report as an innovative online, ready to experiment with digital formats. Your opinion on the Times report is relatively opposite, offering a well informed (although slightly biased) review. If you are looking for some balance in the overwhelmingly positive discussion, check this one out.

Better yet, if you have a spare half hour in the gym, on your morning walk or while traveling to work, listening to Robert Rose and Joe Pullizi Content Marketing Institute discuss the ramifications of this report in glorious detail in Episode 27 of its PNR This Old Podcast marketing.

5 Development Tricks Self-Sufficient Marketers Should Master

There are very few things that frustrate me as much as nearly complete a task only to realize ". Crap I need a developer for that."

While there are some posts job best left to programmers, coders, and quality control specialists, there is room for us as marketers to step up our game. Mastering these five skills and I bet you trust the developers a little less and make your job a little faster.
Tracking data
1. Google manager tags

Google manager labels started to make our lives as non-programmers much easier and limit the amount of effort it takes to set up tracking tools and optimization of sites. You're probably familiar with it, but it's really an expert?

If you have not studied in Google Tag Manager, it's time. Allows you to add, remove and manage tracking tags websites without having to edit the code directly into your website. If you are completely familiar with GTM I start migrating from labels and mastering the logic behind the data layer of GTM.

The data layer involves editing code, but the compensation is rich data about user behavior.

For bonus points, you must familiarize yourself with the automatic variable event and start following major actions such as button clicks or error messages in forms.

Even if you do not go as far as editing the code within the data layer yourself (do not feel bad, I guess you most vendors will not), have a good understanding of their capabilities. That knowledge alone will help you tremendously as you determine which tags to add to your website and coach developers through the process. Access to more information is only going to make a best seller in the end.
Coding and Design

Two. HTML and CSS Coding Basic Shapes

whether you're an amateur or a beginner HTML, knowing how to create or edit HTML forms and get into CSS will help you get the ideas to market faster. Work out a template if needed, but spend some time with an encoder and take a few HTML courses to make you feel comfortable editing forms and launching contactless changes a developer.

Use cheat sheets to help you create different types of fields and buttons so you can take your marketing efforts from conception to completion with little involvement of a developer. Check out this article for coding specific advice if you are new forms.

If you have a good understanding of how forms are built, you cannot just build your own, but you can also identify when a shape is broken and why. With practice, you may even be able to do the fix yourself.
Three. Markdown

Markdown is not new, but is becoming an increasingly valuable for people who do not have a coding background resource. Using simple key is allowed to integrate things like headings, block quotes, images with references, links, and my personal favorite - Tables - in text documents to be formatted for the web.

While some may still see it as a simple tool for bloggers with Markdown you do not have to fight hacky editions WYSIWYG editors for the styles you want to appear on your site.

Tools like MarkdownPad version for Windows and browser allow you to write in Markdown format and convert it to HTML so even if you are not integrating the content in WordPress, for example, which has a Markdown plugin, you can easily enter the content correct time format that is consistent and time again.
Quality Control Testing

Sellers may be professionals in the A / B testing to determine the success of the ideas or tactics, but if you are throwing new feature, upgrade one way or prepare for a big sale online, you need to think as a specialist quality control and testing work before it enters into force. There are two test scenarios that marketers should be well versed in.

April. Testing Changes in different browsers

Use a web-based tool as BrowserStack to create a virtual machine and simulate what a site looks like in different browsers and operating systems.

BrowserStack has almost all active browsers and operating system combinations, which is especially useful if you know of a particular combination is more popular among visitors to the site according to Google Analytics, but not personally used that version of the browser or system operating.

Changes Testing and troubleshooting on different browsers can discover something that requires a developer to fix, however, should prevent his team so dependent on quality control.

If you do not have a team of quality assurance, definitely add this resource to your toolbox.

Be sure to remember your website demographic when being tested. A task that is simple for you may not be easy to someone at a range of more or much younger age.

Demographics older, for example, are more likely to double-click buttons that are younger. Consider how the audience will interact with the site to ensure they get the best possible experience problems and you get caught in a test environment, rather than hearing about them to a customer.

May. Load testing for peak traffic

Load testing is especially important if you are preparing for a big event that will lead to an unusual spike in traffic and activity on your website. Some testing tools free performance can be easily configured to simulate an estimated number of users and the amount of time you think you will stay in place. Running these tests will give you the assurance that your site will support an increase in visitors.

Moreover, these tests will be announced well in advance if you need to make technical changes before your event to handle the increase in traffic. While changes to improve the ability to place a developer are required, it is always better to take a proactive approach when it expects a large increase in traffic to your website.

ASO is the new SEO as App Annie adds free app store optimization, plus ad analytics

Either its Christmas in May or App Annie really desires to win the mobile analytics battle. The companies declared this morning that it is releasing a free app store optimization tool that will assist developers make their products extra visible on the iOS app store & Google Play. And it as well declared updates to its Advertising Analytic tools that assist app publishers track monetization of their apps across more than twenty ad platforms.

Ad analytics is something App Annie has been working on for the past half year.
The trouble the corporation is trying to solve is that app publishers are monetizing with manifold ad networks at the same time, so it is not always simple and easy to see which networks are bringing in the most excellent return. Our Mobile Games Monetization report got that the most victorious developers monetize through the most number of networks — often up to 10 at a time.
So App Annie’s ad analytics platform makes one central dashboard where developers can observe all their networks and all their stats & evaluate them to discover the best ones.
The challenge for App Annie, of course, is that while it at present supports “20+” ad networks, there are lots of more in existence. In fact, there are at least eighty five that we gathered important amounts of data on. And as we got, it is the little guys that often bring in the bigger dollars — not the Google’s of the ad planet. So while 20+ is significant, it may not be sufficient for each developer.
The good news? Some of the top-monetizing networks on the world are on the list, containing Ad Colony and InMobi.

App Annie’s other statement now is a new product for app store optimization: “ASO,” the new SEO.
That is make suring that your keywords, your description, your icon, & all your metadata makes your app as discoverable via the app store search engines as probable, assisting app developers get extra native downloads (as opposed to paying for installs via advertising, incentivized downloads, & other costly ways.)
With over 2 billion apps in Google Play and iOS , and 82% of users never look beyond the first 25 applications , developers have a trouble, says App Annie. In fact, in accordance with competitor Flurry, 60% of the applications are never downloaded at all.
So new ASO App Annie tool analyzes your competitors & their own applications, find out what their classification & what does not, and make suggestions for development. It can as well give an ordered list of applications that are classified for a particular keyword, so you can see how far down the list you are.

The battle for the analysis of the application is a beast, with competitors like Flurry, Distimo App Annie & Localytics fighting and other developer mindshare & large database of the fruits that have their SDKs integrated hundreds of thousands of applications that live in hundreds of millions of devices, not to mention more private suites monetization & analysis, as that from Swrve .

International rank checking: four ways to get results for free by @5le - 2 minutes ago
Thursday, May 8, 2014, 12:42:55 GMT by Eli Schwartz
There are countless posts published on SEO blogs declaring search engine rank checking is dead, and ranking reports should no longer be shared as a KIP. While I wholeheartedly agree that rank tracking should not be the primary metric one uses to determine SEO success or failure, rankings reports still play an important part in the role of an SEO. In my own role, I no longer see the benefit of frequent rank checking on a mass scale,

Those of you that are self-aware that your use of social media likely doesn't gel with the remainder of the world will find the following amusing. For those that have been in denial-or just ignorant bliss-then consider this your wake up call. It's not all about ranking: benefits of backlinks beyond seo by @linkbuildingjon - 1 hour and 23 minutes ago

Google's search algorithm places such great emphasis on the accumulation of backlinks that link builders can forget the value of a link beyond search. Yes, quality backlinks can carry enormous weight and help bring your site to the top of a competitive SERP. That's not the only purpose of a link, however. Even though the majority of clients at my company are interested primarily in search traffic, link building can certainly be used for other purposes.
